Disclaimer & Medical Notice

emgguide.de is a free educational and reference resource for electrode placement in surface electromyography (sEMG). This page describes what the content is intended for — and what it explicitly is not.

Last updated: 2026-08-18
In short: educational and reference resource · not a medical device · no diagnosis or treatment · not a substitute for medical advice · to be applied only by trained persons following the manufacturer's instructions.

Educational and reference purpose

The 3D viewer, the muscle pages and the knowledge base are provided solely for information, education and quick reference for physiotherapists, trainers, students and researchers. They do not replace formal training in surface EMG or supervision by qualified instructors.

Not a medical device — no diagnosis, no treatment

emgguide.de is not a medical device and does not provide medical, diagnostic or therapeutic advice. Surface EMG visualises the electrical activation of muscles; the electrode positions shown here are recommendations for a reproducible recording — they do not constitute a diagnosis, do not assess a state of health and do not support any treatment decision. For health-related questions, consult a physician or qualified therapist.

Use by trained persons

Performing EMG measurements on people — in particular skin preparation, electrode application and the handling of measurement equipment — belongs in the hands of trained persons. Contraindications (e.g. active implants, injured or irritated skin, allergies to electrode materials) as well as safety and hygiene instructions are defined by the instructions for use of the respective device and electrode manufacturer and must always be observed. Responsibility for the application lies with the person applying it.

Sources: SENIAM and scientific literature

Electrode positions labelled "SENIAM" follow the recommendations of the European SENIAM project (Hermens et al. 2000). Positions labelled "adapted" come from peer-reviewed literature or practice atlases and are marked as such on each muscle page; some muscles deliberately have no position because the literature does not describe a reliable single-muscle surface recording. emgguide.de is not an official SENIAM product and is not affiliated with the SENIAM project. All sources are listed on the References page.

Accuracy, currency and liability

The content has been created with the greatest possible care and is maintained on an ongoing basis. Nevertheless, we cannot guarantee its accuracy, completeness or currency; the literature evolves, and anatomical variation may require deviating positions in individual cases. Liability for material or immaterial damage arising from the use or non-use of the content is excluded unless caused by proven intent or gross negligence.

External links and easyEMG

emgguide.de is operated by menios GmbH and links to the biofeedback and analysis software easyEMG by the same provider as well as to external sources. easyEMG is likewise not a medical device. The operators of linked external sites are solely responsible for their content; no legal violations were apparent at the time of linking.
